Hot & Hearty Sandwiches

Sandwiches are a staple in most households, but they're typically relegated to lunchtime, coming together by default rather than design. Last night's leftovers are transformed into today's lunch. And sometimes it's delicious - purely by chance. With just a little more planning, sandwiches can be served up as complete meals, hearty enough for dinnertime appetites. Sandwiches with that "just-right" combination of ingredients are wholesome and satisfying, especially when served warm on a cool fall evening.

The secret to successful sandwich making is choosing bread to complement the flavor and texture of the filling. A moist and chewy filling is a perfect match for a thick, crusty roll, whereas lighter ingredients work well with more delicate slices. For instance, our Steak Sandwich with Balsamic Onions, a saucy, meaty combination, needs a substantial baguette to contain all the flavor, but the more subdued texture of the Spiced Salmon Sandwich works beautifully inside a soft, whole grain bread. And a good quality white bread is still a favorite for grilled cheese. Head to our Bakery department for an excellent selection of artisan breads that transform a quick bite into a real meal. The bottom line is that freshly made bread can make even an ordinary sandwich memorable.
