Arranging Cut Flowers
A good rule of thumb when starting an arrangement is to choose a vase that is
half as tall as your flowers.
Fill your vase half full with water. To help your flowers survive, add floral
food included with your bouquet - or make your own formula by adding two
aspirin and a teaspoon of sugar to every quart of water. To reduce bacteria,
add a few drops of bleach to your water.
Make a fresh 45 degree cut to all stems, allowing maximum water absorption. If
possible, make cuts under running water.
Remove any leaves that would be sitting in water and start adding flowers to
vase. Start with foliage at the rim of the vase to hold flowers in place then
work toward the center, placing the tallest flowers in the middle. Create a
focal point by placing the brightest, largest flowers in the bottom half of the
arrangement. Change water and recut stems every five days. |
