How to get kids to eat more veggies.
Sure, we all know that veggies are good for us,
and that they’re great for growing kids. But how can we get kids to eat these nutrient-rich Guiding Stars® rock stars? Kids can be hesitant about trying new foods. Experts say you may have
to offer the same food they’re resisting several times (up to 15 times sometimes), before kids discover that they actually like it. With patience, persistence and creativity, you can
help kids learn to enjoy their vegetables.
Involving kids in the process of food preparation is a great way to get them to try something new. They’re more likely to try a snack or meal that they made themselves! Here are some easy-to-make
snacks that involve kids in the process:
- Create a “make your own pasta bar” with an assortment of vegetables and other healthy ingredients such as beans.
Kids can then "shop" the pasta bar to make their own signature dish.
- Have kids fill whole-wheat tortillas with shredded romaine lettuce, chopped tomatoes, green peppers, and turkey
slices, or homemade tuna salad using light mayonnaise. Roll up and slice into sandwich wheels.
- Buy pre-cut red, green, yellow and orange peppers and baby carrots, and dip them into hummus or mild salsa.
- Make-your-own pizzas with fresh vegetables, part-skim mozzarella and starred tomato sauce on whole-wheat mini pitas or English muffin halves. Kids can even
arrange the veggies into funny faces on their pizza.
- Make lettuce wraps by placing slices of turkey or roast beef on top of romaine lettuce leaves, add chopped tomato or low-fat cheese slices. Roll up and enjoy.
