Hannaford program provides nearly $1 million in food assistance

SCARBOROUGH, Maine – A charitable campaign sponsored by Hannaford Supermarkets has contributed $993,242 in product and cash donations to food banks and food pantries in five states during the past year.

Most recently, the program raised $22,000 in five states in June as customers made donations at the check-out register. This summer’s cash donation of more than $7,000 to Good Shepherd Food Bank in Auburn comes at a time of year when contributions to food banks and pantries can be low and demand high, when children no longer have access to lunch programs.

Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger is a partnership between the company and its customers to support food-assistance programs. The program invites customers at specific times of the year to donate money at the register, buy boxes of food staples for local pantries and purchase products that trigger donations by Hannaford to state and regional food banks.

“Hannaford is committed to helping people access nutritious food and making it easy for customers to contribute to their community,” said Eric Blom, spokesman for Hannaford. “Our customers displayed enormous generosity through the 2011-12 Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger program and clearly understood that many of our neighbors are struggling.”
