Hannaford Supermarkets commemorates its 25-year anniversary in New York

First Hannaford store in New York opened in Queensbury in 1987

QUEENSBURY, New York – Hannaford Supermarkets will celebrate a quarter century of serving shoppers in New York when the grocery chain this week marks the 25th anniversary of the first Hannaford to open in the Empire State.

The Queensbury store at 190 Quaker Road first opened its doors on November 2, 1987. Hannaford has since opened 48 additional stores in the Greater Capital Region, Hudson Valley and Utica-area, bringing its total number of stores in New York to 49.

“As we mark this milestone anniversary, we cannot help but to reflect upon the past 25 years of tremendous growth and expansion for Hannaford in New York,” said Hannaford Supermarkets Vice President of Retail Operations Western Division Rudy DiPietro. “We are honored to continue to bring our signature combination of everyday low prices, quality foods and outstanding service to residents throughout New York.”

Queensbury store celebrates 25th anniversary with day of special events and activities

The Queensbury store will hold a 25th anniversary celebration Saturday, November 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Shoppers will be invited to participate in a number of family-friendly activities and will have the opportunity to win a variety of giveaways and exclusive discount coupons throughout the day.

Queensbury Store Manager Dorothy Merrill, who joined Hannaford 25 years ago as an associate at the store she currently manages, will be recognized for a quarter century of service alongside 11 other Hannaford associates marking the same milestone.

Additionally, Hannaford will donate $1,250 each to the Open Door Food Pantry and the Family Service Association in support of hunger relief in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Queensbury store. The donation will take place on November 3.

Hannaford opens 49 stores throughout New York during 25-year period

Hannaford’s expansion in New York began shortly after the opening of its first store in Queensbury, with the openings of four locations in 1988 in East Greenbush, Albany, Amsterdam and Clifton Park.

The grocer officially expanded to Central New York in January of 1990 with the opening of a store in Utica. Ten years later in July of 2000, Hannaford marked the new millennium with its first store in the Hudson Valley in Wallkill.

Most recently, Hannaford celebrated the grand openings of supermarkets in Malta and Livingston. Additionally, Hannaford recently completed renovations to its stores in Colonie, Clifton Park, Delmar, West Sand Lake and Niskayuna.

Hannaford’s present-day footprint extends from Lake Placid in the north to Carmel in the south; and Utica in the west to East Greenbush in the east.

“All of us at Hannaford are tremendously proud of our long-term success in New York, which we credit to the support of our loyal shoppers, who continuously return to Hannaford in search of the freshest quality foods at low prices,” said DiPietro.

Hannaford shows commitment to its neighbors by giving back to the community

Hannaford Supermarkets has a longstanding history of supporting various community endeavors and initiatives.

The “Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger” program, a joint endeavor between Hannaford stores and their shoppers, is about to get underway again after generating more than $244,000 in New York last year to benefit regional food banks and local food pantries. Since 2008, the program has contributed a total of more than $3.5 million in food, customer cash gifts and Hannaford cash donations to local food pantries and food banks throughout the five states where Hannaford operates in the Northeast.

Additionally, Hannaford has helped support numerous community events and organizations in New York, including the Hannaford Kidz Expo at Empire State Plaza; the Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center; the Albany Police Athletic League; the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region; the United States Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program; Hannaford Pitch for Kids; the Hannaford Hispanic Heritage Celebration; and the Troy Turkey Trot, among others.
