The Nation's First Living Building Supermarket

In 2009, the Cony Street Hannaford in Augusta, Maine, set the bar for sustainable retail operations worldwide as the first supermarket in North America to achieve Platinum LEED for Retail certification. Now, we're on our way to being the nation's first Living Building certified supermarket. At the end of a year-long evaluation, the Cony Street store could be the first supermarket in the U.S. to achieve the Living Building Challenge Core for Interiors Certification – an advanced regimen of sustainability standards.

Greater Than Groceries

What's important to you is important to us. From carrying 100% sustainable seafood, using renewable energy sources and achieving zero waste goals in our stores, to fighting hunger in our communities and supporting local farms, we share your passion and commitment to making the world a better place.

Zero Food Waste to Landfills Achieved!

We've reached our goal of sending no food waste to landfills. To achieve our goal, all Hannaford stores first focused on preventing food waste, then prioritized reuse and recycling methods.

We donate approximately 25 million pounds of food to hunger relief per year

When we have safe, edible food that we can't sell in our stores, our highest priority is donating that food to people in need. These donation efforts provided 20 million meals for people in our communities and helped reduce food waste by over 44%. We're proud to partner with several hunger relief agencies in our communities.

Hannaford Seafood Sustainability

"Hannaford is a national leader in the supermarket industry for managing sustainability across a large number of stores."

– Peter Cooke, Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences

100% of our stores are certified as stewards for sustainability

Our stores are audited annually for environmentally preferred practices. We review water use, energy use and storm water run-off practices to ensure we operate with minimal impact to the environment. All of our stores meet or exceed the standards set by the Ratio Institute's Grocery Stewardship Certification Program and we work to continually improve our score year after year.

We saved 7 million kilowatt hours of energy by switching to LED lighting

We use high-efficiency overhead lighting in our stores that can help us save up to 500,000 kWh annually. That's enough to power 46 homes for a year.

100% of our store brand coffee is Fair Trade Certified

The Global Fair Trade movement has empowered 975,000 farmers and workers across Africa, Asia, Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean to reach better terms with their trading partners. Fair Trade Certified products are produced according to rigorous standards that protect farmers, workers, fishermen and the environment.

Our Climate Action

Our social and environmental action goes beyond the products in your cart. We make mindful decisions about the energy we consume and the carbon we emit. That's why we're committing to reach net-zero carbon emissions across our own operations by 2040, and to become a net zero business, we are also committed to achieving net zero across our entire supply chain, products and services by 2050.

Farm Animal Welfare Policy

Hannaford is a passionate supporter of the well-being and welfare of farm animals. We are continuously refining our approach and seeking to improve sustainability and transparency within our supply chain. Hannaford looks to partner with suppliers who are committed to sound, science-based animal care practices and the elimination of animal cruelty, abuse and neglect. We believe that an animal's welfare at all phases of its life should be considered in terms of the globally recognized "five freedoms" of animal welfare.
