Hannaford Super Markets - Corporate Social Responsibility
people

Making healthy food choices simple and providing easy access to health and nutrition information are some of our most important contributions to our customers and our associates.

When it Comes to Nutrition, We Reach for the Stars

We developed our Guiding Stars® program to make healthy eating compatible with fast-paced lifestyles. At a glance, shoppers can identify foods with the highest nutritional values throughout our stores. We’re proud of the fact that Guiding Stars is the first storewide nutrition navigation system.

In addition to nutritional navigation with Guiding Stars, Hannaford provides the following tools to enrich the health and well-being of our customers, associates and communities:

  • Free nutrition classes—Sign up for a variety of topics, including eating to manage a variety of health
conditions. Have a nutrition question? Send it to our dietitian!
  • healthy saver® plus—Our prescription savings program was created to help our customers stretch health care dollars. For a small annual fee, you can purchase any one of over 450 featured generic prescription drugs for just $4 from a Hannaford in-store pharmacy.
  • Store tours—Designed to teach children from preschool through fifth grade about healthy eating.
  • fresh magazine—Features healthy recipes for every season, including recipes for special diets.

making nutrition fun

Hannaford is pleased to partner with the live theater company, FOODPLAY, to encourage children to make healthy eating choices. The Emmy Award-winning troupe employs fantastic feats of juggling, captivating characters, music and magic, and encourages audience participation to inspire better eating and exercise habits.

Our complimentary supermarket tours, designed to teach children from preschool through fifth grade about healthy eating, meet national field trip learning standards. Tours are a fun way for kids to learn about local and global food production, and reinforce nutritious choices through our Guiding Stars program.

corporate Responsibility Starts at Home

At Hannaford, social responsibility starts with our associates. We encourage a culture of health that encompasses body, mind and spirit.

Wellness ambassadors and nurses at every Hannaford work site support our employees with nutritional counseling, smoking cessation and weight loss programs, exercise incentives and more.

For three years running, in 2007 to 2009, we’ve won top honors in the prestigious Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles awards—the only retailer in the country to do so.

Financial health is part of our holistic outlook. We have a solid foundation of fair and competitive pay, health insurance and retirement policies. We strive for inclusiveness and a workforce that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve.

We believe a diverse workforce is a source of strength and creativity for our company. We value lifelong learning along with personal and professional growth, and offer a broad range of training and ongoing educational opportunities.

Supporting Our Communities

Wherever we do business, we dedicate time and resources to support schools and charitable organizations that enrich our communities.

The Hannaford Charitable Foundation was established in 1994 and when combined with other charitable community support activities, gives approximately $4 million annually through donations and sponsorships within the communities served by more than 165 Hannaford stores.

Every year Hannaford donates nine million-plus pounds of groceries to hunger-relief programs. In 2008 we also raised more than $1 million through the holiday season to support local and regional food banks and soup kitchens in our communities.

We introduced Fund a Feast in 2006. This popular program offers customers an easy way to help provide meals for less fortunate families. Each $10 Fund a Feast box contains a selection of non-perishable items that food banks need most.

Hannaford has been a proud supporter of the United Way for more than seventy years, raising more than $1.4 million in 2008. We’re particularly pleased to be a partner in Let’s Go!, a program that promotes healthy kids through physical activity and nutrition. We encourage our employees to support their local United Way chapters, both as volunteers and through financial contributions. Many Hannaford associates are key decision makers on boards and committees, assuring that donations are spent wisely. Last year the company contributed $50,000 in matching funds toward new and lapsed donors in Maine.

Hannaford is a major sponsor of numerous community events, including the American Heart Association's Heart Walks, and the Diabetes Association’s Step Out to Fight Diabetes. We frequently partner with the Red Cross to host blood drives. And in 2008 we raised more than $50,000 through our annual breast cancer awareness campaign.
