Hannaford Super Markets - Corporate Social Responsibility
planet

We’re coming up with new ideas every day on how to reduce our energy consumption and preserve natural resources. What’s good for the environment creates a healthy business as well—and when we save money with more efficient stores, we can keep our costs low for customers, too.

The Greener Grocer

Efficiency-wise, Hannaford Supermarkets outperform most other grocery stores, thanks in part to state-of-the-art building automation systems that allow remote monitoring and control of heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, refrigeration and lighting systems.

In addition, reclaimed heat displaces fossil fuels in many space heating applications. Not only do green energy practices help us reduce our carbon emissions, we save more than $50,000 per store annually.

our platinum leed cerified store

Our Green StoreYou're invited to join us for the opening of a uniquely green Hannaford store in Augusta, Maine, on August 25, 2009.

The Augusta store will be 44 percent more energy-efficient than a typical supermarket. Green features include geothermal heating and cooling, solar photovoltaic panels, high-efficiency refrigeration and energy-efficient lighting.

A green roof will provide insulation and help control storm water runoff. Throughout construction, we’re aiming to recycle 95 percent of the material from the site. This pilot store is part of a larger initiative to test green designs for future stores.

Partnering with the EPA for a Better Way

Partnering with the EPAHannaford has been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an ENERGY STAR Leader. ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the EPA and the Department of Energy that promotes energy-efficient products and practices.

Visit energystar.gov for more information.

Hannaford Trucking is proud to be a partner in the EPA’s SmartWay transportation program.

As a SmartWay carrier, we’ve improved operations while increasing overall energy efficiency through optimized delivery schedules, fuel conservation and reduced emissions. Energy-efficient SmartWay upgrades range from adding tandem trailers to the fleet to using single-wide tires, which increase fuel efficiency by up to 12 percent.

We’re also working with manufacturers to create lighter, more aerodynamic vehicles and exploring hybrid refrigeration technology for our refrigerated trailers.

Waste Not, Want Not

Waste is a dirty, not-so-little problem—costly to dispose of in landfills and/or incinerate with the attendant pollution. At Hannaford we recognized the need for recycling and reducing waste decades ago.

Our stores currently recycle more than 60% of all waste generated—including cardboard, plastics, paper, waxed cardboard and food waste. More than 40% of Hannaford stores recycle organic material through composting programs or by donating it to local farmers for livestock feed.

At the corporate level we have programs in place for recycling batteries, ink cartridges, lightbulbs, paper products and e-waste (obsolete computer equipment and fluorescent lamps).

We’re also committed to reducing our private label packaging and increasing the recyclability of the packaging we use. For instance, we recently switched our Nature’s Place produce packaging from styrofoam to a compostable tray.

Around the world, the battle to banish the supermarket plastic bag is gaining momentum. Approximately 11 barrels of oil are required to produce one ton of plastic bags. Compounding the problem, it takes about a thousand years for a plastic bag to decompose naturally. And while paper bags are biodegradable, they too leave a footprint.

At Hannaford we’ve increased the demand for reusable bags ten times over and will continue to make this option readily available to customers, aiming to reduce our use of plastic and paper over time.

What We’re Doing About Water

In many countries the lack of potable water has a tremendous impact on public health and agriculture. At Hannaford, we recognize the need to conserve and are taking steps to use less. As a first step, our green pilot store will reduce water consumption by approximately 540,000 gallons per year.

Chemicals & Toxins

Hannaford is committed to minimizing the use and sale of toxic chemical products to reduce risk to customers, associates and our environment. We’re partnering with Chemstar Corporation, a global leader in food safety and sanitation solutions, to explore and test greener chemical options for cleaning our stores. You’ll find a variety of non-toxic cleaners and household products available in all Hannaford supermarkets.

Looking Ahead

At Hannaford we are committed to further reducing our operational waste and greenhouse gas emissions. We’re keeping track of our carbon footprint in order to identify more ways to reduce our impact on global climate change.

In addition to our green pilot store, slated to open in June, Hannaford is testing a number of renewable energy strategies for future stores.

Four Hannaford supermarkets are currently using renewable energy from solar photovoltaic panels installed on their roofs. The green store will become the fifth.

Our Schodack, New York distribution center is collecting data for a wind turbine, which we hope will provide ten to twenty percent of the building’s energy. And we’re evaluating ways to utilize wind energy in more facilities in the future.

As you can see, social responsibility is not something Hannaford takes lightly. We hope this Web site paints a full picture of our efforts toward a culture of health and sustainability. You can learn more about what we’re doing in these and other areas on our Web site, www.hannaford.com. We encourage your feedback, and invite you to contact us.

Be healthy. See you in the supermarket.
