Pear-Cranberry Mostarda

Ingredients

Mostarda is an Italian condiment similar to chutney, and is perfect for roasted meats or for serving with a cheese plate. Sweet fruit is cooked in tart brine spiced with mustard seeds and ginger.
1/2 cup dried cranberries
1/4 cup sherry or cider vinegar
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp. mustard seeds
3/4 tsp. ground ginger
generous pinch ground cloves
pinch salt
pinch freshly ground black pepper
1 (2 to 3 inch) strip lemon peel
2 Bosc pears, peeled, cored, and coarsely chopped
Pear-Cranberry Mostarda

Directions

1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine cranberries, vinegar, water, sugar, mustard seeds, ginger, cloves, salt, pepper, and lemon peel. Bring to a simmer, and then add pears.
2. Cook stirring occasionally, until pears are tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.
3. Remove lemon peel. Pour mostarda into (16-oz.) storage container. Serve mostarda warm, at room temperature, or cold.
