Customers contributed more than $40,000 to local food banks during recent register donation campaign

Details:

SCARBOROUGH, Maine – As food banks across the country experience a growing level of need, a joint partnership between Hannaford Supermarkets and its customers recently generated more than $110,000 to support individuals and families experiencing food insecurity.

Customers donated more than $40,000 during a register donation campaign held at all 189 Hannaford stores from May 12 through July 31. Hannaford kicked off the campaign with $70,000 in donations – amounting to more than $110,000 in funding or the equivalent of over 1 million meals* for a total of seven food banks in New England and New York.

“At Hannaford, we’ve long believed it’s our responsibility to create ‘more good’ in our communities,” said Mike Vail, President of Hannaford Supermarkets. “Having access to fresh, nutritious food is an essential need, and caring for our neighbors experiencing food insecurity is one of the most meaningful ways we can lift one another up. We thank our customers for their support.”

The campaign occurred as food banks across the nation experience rising hunger rates. A 2024 survey from Feeding America shows that 80 percent of responding food banks reported an increased demand for food assistance, and 65 percent reported an increase in the number of neighbors served.

Data released in 2024 shows that the hunger rate in Maine, Hannaford’s home state, rose sharply from 10.6 to 13.1 percent, a 24 percent increase. Last year, Good Shepherd Food Bank, one of the beneficiaries of the register donation campaign, distributed nearly 40 million meals to Mainers experiencing food insecurity.

“Good Shepherd Food Bank is grateful for our longstanding partnership with Hannaford and for their commitment to fighting hunger in Maine”, said Food Bank President, Heather Paquette. “Campaigns like their recent register fundraiser not only raise critical funds at a time when hunger in Maine is at its highest level in a decade but offer an opportunity for their customers to participate in providing relief for their neighbors living with food insecurity. Thank you to everyone who donated, your generosity will help us in our work to ensure that everyone in Maine has access to the food they need to thrive.”

The food banks benefitting from the campaign, each of which will receive a $10,000 donation from Hannaford in addition to funds raised at local stores in their service area, are as follows:

The campaign demonstrates Hannaford’s longtime commitment to hunger relief. In 2024, Hannaford donated more than 27.5 million pounds of food to help feed neighbors in need.

*According to Feeding America, $10 can help provide food for the equivalent of 100 meals.Meal equivalency may vary by individual food bank.
