Hannaford to give away reusable shopping bags in South Portland, donate funds to hunger relief locally

South Portland, Maine – The Hannaford Supermarkets stores in South Portland will be distributing free reusable shopping bags during the last week of February, in advance of the city's new fee on single-use bags.
From February 22 to February 29, the Hannaford stores in Mill Creek and near the Maine Mall will be bagging groceries in durable Fight Hunger shopping bags.  With each bag used, Hannaford will donate 25 cents toward hunger relief in South Portland.
This program is similar to one Hannaford ran in advance of Portland's single-use bag fee.  Both communities have passed laws that require supermarkets to charge customers 5 cents for each plastic or paper shopping bag used.  The South Portland fee goes into effect March 1.
"Hannaford is committed to making this transition as smooth and easy for customers as possible," said Cheryl Hinkson, Director of Operations for the Greater Portland region. "We hope the shopping-bag give-away will help prepare our South Portland customers for the municipal fee and make a contribution to the community at the same time."
